Bowhunting Shiras Moose in the Lower 48

Shiras Moose are the smallest of the 3 classifications, and also the most difficult to be drawn for in the lower 48 states. P&Y classifies only moose taken in the lower 48 as Shiras however SCI and Super Slam club recognize moose taken in SE British Columbia and SW Alberta as Shiras. If you are fortunate enough to be drawn in the lower 48 (can't win the lottery unless you buy a ticket!) there are numerous outfitters who will be able to take you bowhunting for this species.

Moose are divided into three categories in North America according to the Pope and Young club. They are the largest member of the deer family in North America, and have a wide geographical range from NFLD on the east coast, to Alaska on the farthest point west, covering all of Canada. There are also moose in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Washington and Wyoming. For BSC clients, 99% of our moose bowhunts are geared toward the Canadian Providence's and Alaska.

The three categories of moose are Alaska Yukon Moose (all moose taken in Alaska, Yukon Territory and NWT's), the Canadian Moose (all moose taken in Canada outside Yukon, NWT's, as well as moose taken in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota) and the Shiras Moose (moose taken in Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Washington) A special note: Safari Club International (SCI) has a different boundary for Shiras moose which extends into southern British Columbia.

P & Y minimum scores for the Alaskan - Yukon moose is 170, Canadian moose - 135, and the Shiras or Wyoming moose is 125. Some moose in portions of British Columbia are recognized as Shiras moose by other Safari Club International, but not Pope and Young.
